Ramadan: Fasting's Impact Upon Muslim Diabetics
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. The extensive fasting performed during the holy months of Ramadan may have its roots firmly planted in the individual's spiritual development; however, for the diabetics who practice this sacred tradition, it poses grave consequences to their ability to effectively manage the disease. It is a known fact that the one aspect of diabetes that cannot be overlooked is the ability to eat small amounts several times a day. Without the appropriate levels of proteins and sugars available to the system, the fasting diabetic only serves to severely complicate his or her condition, ultimately threatening the chances for survival. The writer discusses the fasting of Ramadan as it relates to Muslim diabetics. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Does Elevated Job Stress Affect Smoking Levels?
[ send me this paper ]
A 28 page paper researching the hypothesis that smokers in high-stress jobs tend to smoke more in response to stress than do smokers in jobs with lower stress levels. Though there was no existing research with which to guide our study, we believe we have obtained solid and statistically valid results that unquestioningly prove that a smoker's response to a high-stress job is that of smoking more than usual. Existing literature emphasizes the relationship between stress and depression, and also that between smoking and depression. Biochemical and psychological research has concluded that there is a strong relationship between smoking and clinical depression, though it is unclear which contributes to the other. This survey does not specifically address depression, but it does give valuable insight to the relationship of stress-related smoking and workplace stress. Bibliography lists 42 sources.

Factors Affecting Cancer and Heart Disease Mortality Rates
[ send me this paper ]
A 30 page paper discussing separately factors affecting the mortality rates of heart disease and cancer, then comparing lifestyle factors that can apply to both in reducing those mortality rates. Cardiovascular disease is the nation's number-one killer; cancer comes in at number two. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease are more controllable from the individual's point of view than are those of cancer, which includes several life events and conditions over which the individual has no control. Those most at risk in the US are the poor, and particularly the poor minorities. For either cardiovascular disease or for cancer, early detection is the most effective of all control measures. Bibliography lists 30 sources.
