The United States had become an important customer for Guatemala's economy, purchasing 60% of Guatemala's annual coffee production. Land reforms and invitations to foreign investment just before the turn of the century had resulted in the immigration of many Germans, who by 1914 oproduced over half of Guatemala's annual coffee production. With ties to both sides, Guatemala was forced to make a choice between the sides: they chose the Allies. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
