Cardiovascular disease is the nation's number-one killer; cancer comes in at number two. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease are more controllable from the individual's point of view than are those of cancer, which includes several life events and conditions over which the individual has no control. Those most at risk in the US are the poor, and particularly the poor minorities. For either cardiovascular disease or for cancer, early detection is the most effective of all control measures.
