The leaders of what has been called China’s literary revolution, the two in combination called for the elimination of Confucianism both as political and personal philosophy. Ch’en Tu-Huiu advocated political parties, a radical idea for China at the time; Cornell- and Columbia-educated Hu Shih pursued the literary renaissance and called for a more reasonable alignment of literature and common speech.
