Kate Phillips' novel White Rabbit (1996) offers a detailed psychological, biographic and social portrait of a tough, eccentric 88-year-old woman, Ruth Caster Armstrong Hubble. The novel recounts the events of Ruth's last day of life. Through flashbacks, the author recounts the transitions that constitute the life of this woman. Examination of Phillips' detailed characterization demonstrates how various psychological facts about women can be dramatized and this illuminates and adds insight into their meaning.
