Borderline Personality Disorder And Sexual Abuse
[ send me this paper ]
15 pages in length. The preponderance of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) being caused by neglect and abuse – most frequently sexual abuse - during childhood has given researchers a significantly greater understanding of how and why people develop BPD. Historically, the connection between borderline personality disorder and general abuse has been duly noted, however, the specific component of sexual abuse has been discovered more and more frequently in contemporary research findings that indicate how sexual abuse may serve to modify or sensitize the stress system in a detrimental manner. Moreover, it has been suggested that the brain's central area may undergo trauma that, when experienced during childhood, can impair emotional memories. Self-esteem, ego and the fundamental ability to like oneself – as well as relate to others on an even platform of emotional stability – play a synergistic role in the extent to which people with BPD are ultimately molded by the sexual abuse they experienced during childhood. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
