This 8 page report discusses the martial art of taekwondo. Modern
taekwondo is an uniquely Korean martial art that came into being
in only the past fifty years. It was most commonly known as
“tangsudo” in the late 1940s and then “taesudo” (“smashing-kick
fist way”) in the 1950s. In the 1960s, it was renamed
“taekwondo” (“tae” = kick, “kwon” = fist, “do” = way) and then
formally received the official endorsement of the South Korean
government. It was a “demonstration sport” in the 1992 summer
Olympics and was recognized as an official Olympic sport in time
for its inclusion in the 2000 summer Olympics in Sydney,
