Dow Corning's Breast Implants
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page report on the debate surrounding the use of silicone gel breast implants. Ralph Nader involved himself in the controversy in 1988. Since then, various groups have come forward with comments: consumer groups in favor of the implants, consumer groups in opposition to the implants, attorneys, insurance companies, plastic surgeons, and even Congress. That there have been problems with the implants is a point that no one contests. The issue at the core of the debate is whether silicone migrating to other areas of the body truly is, as was originally thought, biologically inert, or whether it contributes to some hidden reaction. Drop Dead Gorgeous - The Inherent Risks of Liposuction
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper that argues that the tumescent technique of surgical liposuction should only be performed by a certified plastic surgeon and only within an acceptable surgical setting. The inherent risks that exist in this procedure are discussed, as well as the danger that has recently been presented by the influx of a number of unskilled and untrained practitioners. Cases of malpractice and misjudgment are cited. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Eating Disorders: Female Verses Male Victims
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the environmental and genetic causes of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. While it is an established belief that eating disorders are more likely to affect females than males, both sexes are affected. The reasons undoubtedly relate to genetics as well as to environmental factors. These reason also could be expected, however, to relate to the limited understanding of eating disorders. Interestingly, as our knowledge of this condition increases so too do the statistics regarding its manifestation in males. While the primary victim of eating disorders still appears to be females, there is undoubtedly some intersex overlap in the factors causing the condition. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Economic Empowerment and its Relation to Women's Reproductive Choice and Health
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page examination of the contention that "the relationship between women's employment and fertility is 'elusive and ambiguous'". The author speculates that in some situations women's employment might be likely to result in greater sexual and reproductive choice. This contention can be demonstrated with a look at microcredit programs, programs which are designed to give women an economic leg-up in the world of business. Sometimes such programs, however, have unexpected results, results which could serve more as a detriment than as a benefit to women's reproductive choice and health. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
